Having roughly formed all the roots with a claw chisel I move on to a flat chisel and begin to carve continuous chamfers running along the length of each root. As you can see from the pictures it creates really interesting gradients of light across the separate planes. The bottom photo shows the process of working methodically along each root ensuring each plane flows well and has a certain tension to it.. I will be going over the sculpture in this way for many days until I am happy. I have also begun to carve the inner curve of the circle using another type of claw chisel. I love the contrast between the smooth surface and the clawed interior so will likely leave this texture.
