Making the external shell – casting from the mold

To make the external shell of the sculpture – what you will actually see – I need to cast from the mold. Adding ‘cheeks’ again to give a precise edge, I first apply a coat of polyester resin gel coat which needs to go off before adding the next layer.

Once this is ready, I add layers of fibreglass matting and general purpose resin to give the shell its strength.

I leave this overnight to harden completely before separating the cast from the mold the next morning and repeating the process three more times so that I have the four quarters.
